Scientific Illustration

This section contains works I am particularly proud of. Scientific illustration is currently my concentration as a Communication arts major at VCU. In order to have this concentration, I must be enrolled in science major specific courses, as well as my art courses in order to accurately interpret information I am drawing.

Title: Green Tree Python

Size: 15 x 20”

Medium/Software: Procreate, Adobe Photoshop

Primary Audience: General Public, Zoo Attendees, anyone interested in Green Tree Pythons

Intended Purpose: This poster is meant to be an informational piece on the Green Tree Python, scientifically known as Morelia viridis. This snake is a part of the reptile family, and is a vibrant green color with flecks of yellow and white irregular scales. Making this piece, I wanted to convey an interesting anatomical feature of not just the green tree python, but other snakes as well. I decided to research the infrared organs located in the Heat pits. This piece is to educate and inform the public on an important anatomical feature of snakes. This is visually beneficial because many people are unsure of what or where these heat pits are located on a snake. By showing the location, a labeled interior of this organ enlarged, and a description of the process of how this organ functions, we get a better understanding of this organ.

Title: Simple Mastectomy

Size: 18 x 24”

Medium/Software: Procreate

Primary Audience: Patients, Breast Cancer treatment centers, General Public

Intended Purpose: The intended purpose of this piece is to inform patients on the simple mastectomy procedure. It is informational, and clear for patients to understand the basic process of this surgery, along with basic information like recovery time, risk level, etc. the pink background was intended to represent breast cancer awareness, and to also ease the mind. I want to specify this particular procedure is more commonly used for breast cancer patients. I made sure to include asking your doctor more information about the procedure because I want patients feeling comfortable learning more about this procedure, and more options they have. I was inspired to create this piece because this surgery is quite traumatic for many people, and giving a visual aid and information alongside it can be assuring to people that they know what is going to happen, and they will be okay.
